On this occasion, MSc. Dr. Trần Hoài Nam, Department of Urology, Hospital 19/8 (Ministry of Public Security), recalled handling several peculiar cases that left lasting impressions.
Waiting for the Doctor’s Call Before Taking the Leap
Valentine’s Day 2023, around 4 p.m., just as Dr. Nam was about to leave his office, a young couple rushed in with visibly tense expressions.
The young man desperately requested an urgent male health screening to check for sexually transmitted infections, hoping for immediate results.
Through questioning, the man revealed that the couple had been dating for two months. On this Valentine’s Day, they decided to “take the leap” and consummate their relationship.

However, an hour earlier, the girlfriend had read numerous online articles about sexually transmitted diseases, leaving her deeply anxious.
She insisted that her boyfriend undergo comprehensive testing before their first sexual encounter to ensure “absolute safety.”
“The boyfriend was very anxious, asking if we could get the test results within an hour. I explained that tests for sexually transmitted diseases would only be ready by evening,” Dr. Nam recalled.
“This ruins our entire Valentine’s Day! The hotel room is booked, gifts are ready, and now we’re stuck here,” the young man lamented.
In this awkward situation, Dr. Nam invited the girlfriend in for counseling. He emphasized that health checks are essential but shouldn’t become overwhelming if both partners have a history of safe sexual behavior. The couple then left, leaving their phone number.

About three hours later, the lab results came back clean. Dr. Nam immediately called the young couple.
“As soon as the phone rang, the young man quickly answered. From what I heard, they were sitting in the hotel room, just waiting for my call.
After I announced the normal results, I heard the young woman cheer loudly over the phone, drowning out the man’s voice. They thanked me and said goodbye. I assume they had a passionate night ahead,” Dr. Nam shared.
Trying an Unusual Position Leads to Emergency Room Visit
Another case occurred on Valentine’s night, involving a rather serious accident.
The young man told Dr. Nam that his penis appeared to be fractured, causing excruciating pain and discoloration.
Initially, the patient claimed he had been in a motorcycle accident. However, upon examination, Dr. Nam found the injury inconsistent with a traffic accident.

After encouragement, the young man confessed the truth: during intercourse with his girlfriend, he attempted a new position inspired by adult films.
“He said he wanted a memorable Valentine’s Day, so he tried something new. But during the act, either due to incorrect positioning or his girlfriend’s movement, his penis bent sharply, producing a cracking sound followed by intense pain and bruising,” Dr. Nam recounted.
From a medical perspective, Dr. Nam explained that a penile fracture is essentially a rupture of the corpus cavernosum—the tissue responsible for erections.
This is one of the most severe injuries in urology. Without timely surgery, it can lead to permanent deformity, loss of erectile function, or chronic pain during intercourse.
Typical symptoms of a penile fracture include:
- A “crack” or “pop” sound at the moment of injury.
- Severe pain, swelling, bruising, and abnormal deformation.
- Immediate loss of erection.
The patient underwent emergency surgery. Fortunately, the damage wasn’t too severe, and recovery prospects were good. Still, this experience will undoubtedly serve as a lifelong lesson.
Preparation for Intimacy
1. Avoid Excessive Worry
Ensuring health before intimacy is important, but excessive fear shouldn’t overshadow emotions and experiences. If there are concerns, get tested beforehand.
2. Always Use Protection
Whether it’s your first time or you’re experienced, condoms remain the safest method to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies.
3. Avoid Dangerous Positions
Many couples seek excitement with new positions but fail to anticipate potential injuries.
4. Don’t Overindulge in Alcohol Before Intimacy
Alcohol may set a romantic mood, but overconsumption can lead to loss of control, increasing the risk of injury or unprotected sex.
5. Seek Immediate Medical Attention for Accidents
If you experience unusual pain, penile fractures, or blood in semen, don’t delay seeking medical help. Early intervention improves recovery chances.
