Vietnam Ready to Mediate Russia-Ukraine Conflict

At Ukraine’s request, on the afternoon of February 17, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son held a phone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Mr. Andrii Sybiha affirmed that Ukraine values its friendly relations and cooperation with Vietnam, welcoming Vietnam’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

During the phone call, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son stated that as a friend of both Russia and Ukraine, Vietnam consistently maintains a balanced and objective position regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Mr. Son emphasized that all disputes must be resolved through peaceful means, in accordance with fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.

Vietnam supports and is ready to participate in international mediation efforts to seek a long-term peaceful solution to the conflict involving all relevant parties.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha agreed to maintain contact and exchanges at various levels, including high-level delegations, and to soon hold political consultations at the Deputy Foreign Minister level.

Previously, on the afternoon of February 13, during the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, journalists asked spokesperson Pham Thu Hang to comment on reports that Vietnam might provide a venue for peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine.

The spokesperson confirmed that Vietnam supports international mediation efforts to find a long-term peaceful solution to the conflict, involving all relevant parties and in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.

“We are also ready to contribute to international efforts to promote dialogue and seek peaceful solutions to bring an end to the current conflict,” Ms. Hang said.

In January, on the occasion of attending the 55th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Ukrainian President Zelensky.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering traditional friendly relations and comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Ukraine, expressing a desire to maintain and promote bilateral cooperation, including exchanges at various levels.

Both sides will continue to seek effective and appropriate measures to sustain growth momentum and quickly restore trade between the two countries, resuming activities of the Joint Governmental Commission on economic-trade cooperation.

The Prime Minister reiterated Vietnam’s balanced, objective, and consistent stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict: all disputes must be resolved peacefully, in accordance with fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.

This includes respecting the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of nations, refraining from the use or threat of force, and taking into account the legitimate interests of all parties involved, according to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister supports international mediation efforts to seek a long-term peaceful solution to the conflict, involving all relevant parties and in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.

At the same time, Vietnam is ready to contribute to international efforts to promote dialogue and seek peaceful solutions to bring an end to the current conflict.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that as a responsible member of the international community, Vietnam hosted the second U.S.-North Korea summit and is willing to provide venues and make every effort to organize peace-seeking activities for global conflicts.
