Influenza A is not just a common illness but can also lead to dangerous complications, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions or weakened immune systems. Recently, severe cases of influenza A have been reported at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, including instances where patients required ventilators within just a few days.
The Worsening Condition of Influenza A Patients
Currently, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases is treating eight patients with influenza A, some in critical condition. A notable case is Mr. L.V.T., 58, from Sơn Dương, Tuyên Quang. Despite having untreated hypertension and a long history of smoking, Mr. T. initially self-medicated his flu symptoms of cough, fever, and shortness of breath at home. After a week without improvement, he was admitted to the hospital and tested positive for influenza A. His respiratory failure quickly worsened, necessitating intubation and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
Another case involves Mr. V.V.U., 62, from Đông Triều, Quảng Ninh, who has a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that has gone unmanaged for seven years. Just three days after developing symptoms of fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to intubation and transfer to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. Despite two weeks of treatment, his prognosis remains grim.
Why Influenza A Becomes Severe
ThS.BS Võ Đức Linh from the Intensive Care Center explained: “Influenza A is particularly dangerous for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The flu virus directly attacks the lungs, causing those with pre-existing lung damage to experience more severe effects than healthy individuals.”

Dr. Linh emphasized that failing to attend regular check-ups and neglecting annual flu vaccinations are primary reasons patients face severe complications. Particularly vulnerable are the elderly, people with underlying conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, or those with weakened immune systems.
ThS.BS Phạm Văn Phúc, Deputy Director of the Intensive Care Center, added: “Many people underestimate the flu, considering it a mild illness and delaying medical consultations. However, once the disease progresses, treatment becomes much more challenging, and outcomes are often poor.”
Prevention and Early Intervention to Minimize Risks
To avoid tragic consequences, experts recommend:
- Annual flu vaccination: This is the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection and limit complications.
- Regular health check-ups: Individuals with pre-existing conditions should frequently monitor their health at specialized medical facilities.
- Personal hygiene practices: Regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded places, and avoiding contact with infected individuals.
- Seek medical attention early: If symptoms such as high fever, persistent cough, or shortness of breath occur, visit a healthcare facility immediately for diagnosis and timely treatment.
Conclusion
Influenza A is not merely a health issue but poses a significant risk of mortality if not detected and managed promptly. Raising public awareness about the importance of prevention and timely treatment plays a crucial role in minimizing the impact of this disease. Take proactive steps today to protect yourself and your family by adopting preventive measures.
