On the last day of the year, the home of Mother Vietnam Hero Đặng Thị Thỉ in Hải Định commune, Hải Lăng district, Quang Tri province became warmer and livelier than ever. Young members and volunteers arrived early to help her prepare the New Year’s dinner, from shopping and cleaning to decorating the space for Tet.
Genuine Affection for Those Who Have Contributed
Mother Đặng Thị Thỉ is a symbol of immense sacrifice, having lost both her husband and only son during the war against the Americans. Despite being 100 years old and frail, she remains mentally sharp and joyful whenever young people visit her.
After hours of hard work, the small house of Mother Thỉ became neat and clean. A well-prepared meal was placed on the altar to honor her late husband and son who sacrificed for national independence. The warm atmosphere spread as young people sat together with her, chatting, singing revolutionary songs, and welcoming spring.
“I’m very happy when you come to visit, chat, cook, and eat with me. Every festival and Tet, you always come to see me like this. You all understand and do meaningful, useful things,” shared Mother Thỉ emotionally.
Simple Meals with Deep Meaning
According to Mr. Lê Quý Trí, Deputy Secretary of the Hải Lăng District Youth Union, the New Year’s dinner prepared for Mother Vietnam Hero is simple but full of deep affection from the young people.
Mr. Trí emphasized that this activity is not just formal but also reflects the responsibility of the younger generation in carrying forward the tradition of “Remembering the source of water,” showing gratitude for the significant contributions of烈士家庭。
