In this year’s enrollment period, there are four medical schools offering undergraduate medical education that include literature in the admissions complex˳ There are many opinions around considering medical school literature˳ We would like to introduce Professor Nguyen Thanh Liem – a leading expert in pediatric surgery˳
Recently, a number of universities have included literature as a standard for admission to medical schools, which has received mixed opinions˳ Opponents argue that to study medicine, chemistry and biology are more important than literature˳ Personally, I support the inclusion of literature in the admission criteria for the following reasons:
first˳ Doctors treat diseases not only by performing procedures, surgeries, and prescriptions, but also with the heart and personality of a physician˳ Someone said “literary is human”, so literature is an important factor in shaping the personality and mind of a physician˳
Literary works give doctors a comprehensive view of the human being, of the complex emotional and psychological states of man˳ This helps doctors develop humanistic thinking, strengthens their ability to understand and empathize with patients, and enables doctors to treat patients individually˳
Scientific knowledge can still be acquired if studying late, but the process of personality and soul formation is a process that begins at an early age˳
2˳ Good literature helps doctors have good communication skills with patients to better understand the disease, to avoid unfortunate conflicts˳
3˳ Studying well in literature helps doctors express ideas in a clear and concise manner when writing reports˳ I have read many master and doctoral theses written with many errors in grammar and expression˳
In international medical student entrance exams, in addition to the theory part, the interview part is very important˳
In this part, the questioner does not focus on scientific knowledge, but requires candidates to have a very broad understanding of many issues, especially social issues, skills to handle situations˳
Generations of Vietnamese doctors trained under the French rule are not only good at their expertise, but are all great personalities with extensive understanding of social issues besides medical expertise˳ That’s what the current generation of doctors needs to learn˳
