In the season of snake bites

According to Dr˳ Nguyen, from the beginning of summer until now, the center has received and treated many snakebite patients˳ This is the “in season” time for snake bites, because the biology of snakes is seasonal activity˳

In winter, snakes usually sleep and in summer come out of the nest to look for food˳ Especially rain is a favorable factor for snakes to move and feed more˳

Being treated at the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, Mr˳ T˳ (53 years old, residing in Thanh Hoa province) said that he was bitten by a cobra while weeding in the garden next to his house˳

Immediately after being bitten by a snake, his family took him to the emergency room at a local hospital in a state of swollen hands and blackened fingers˳ After that, Mr˳ T˳ requested to be transferred to Bach Mai Hospital for treatment˳

Doctor Nguyen said that immediately after receiving the patient, the patient was transfused with anti-venom serum˳ However, the bitten finger was necrotic, the patient was continued to monitor and handle the infection˳

Also being treated at the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, Mrs˳ H˳ (49 years old) said that she was bitten on her hand by a cobra while she was draining the field˳ Immediately, she was taken to the emergency room by her family˳ Currently, Ms˳ H˳ is still receiving anti-venom serum˳

Beware of areas where snakes can hide

Doctor Nguyen said that the number of poisonous snakes in Vietnam is very large, the most common are cobras and red-tailed vipers˳

“Cobra is a species with very good adaptability˳ In particular, because the natural habitat is increasingly narrowed, they are forced to adapt˳ They can live in every corner, pile of bricks and stones, intermingling with humans, especially in residential areas˳

Cobra’s food is very familiar such as eggs, chicks, toads, mice… Therefore, people need to be wary of the garden area around the house, where snakes can hide˳

Regarding first aid when bitten by a snake, Doctor Nguyen said that when bitten by a snake, it is necessary to quickly put the victim on a stretcher / stretcher, do not let the patient move or walk on their own to avoid spreading the poison˳ The medical facility will determine the type of snake bite and inject the appropriate antivenom

“Some mistakes in first aid when bitten by a venomous snake are applying male medicine, injecting snakebite, injecting electricity … People absolutely do not make incisions, squeeze the wound to extract the venom because it causes bleeding, infection and increases the absorption of venom˳ Also do not apply leaves because it can cause wound infection and delay the arrival of the victim to a medical facility,” said Dr˳ Nguyen˳
